Police appeal for mother to come forward amid fears for her health
Officers are appealing for information to trace the mother of a newborn baby found in Newham last night.
The child, a baby girl, is being cared for at an East London hospital where her condition is stable. She has been unofficially named Roman by hospital staff after the road where she was found.
The baby girl was found just after 10pm last night in a small children’s play park on Roman Road, near to the junction with Saxon Road. She was found by a woman who was walking her dog with her children when they heard the baby cry. They immediately alerted the emergency services. The baby girl was discovered in a shopping bag wrapped in a white towel on the floor next to a park bench. She had not been hidden and there were no other people present.
Police are increasingly concerned for the welfare of the baby’s mother who may be in need of urgent medical assistance. We urge her to contact police or London Ambulance Service.
In a direct appeal to the child’s mother, Inspector Shane Clarke of North East Command Unit, said: “We are growing increasingly concerned for your welfare and I urge you to make contact either with police, your local hospital or GP surgery. It is really important that we know that you are safe.
“I would also urge anyone who has information that could help us to reunite this baby with her mother to come forward.”
